Since most guys give their cars girl’s names, I figured mine should be a male. However due to the original pink(ish) paint – a man’s name just didn’t seem to fit. So, “she’s” a girl…but I just call her Studie.

Yep, she’s a 1955 Studebaker Champion.

Getting her from a fellow in Utah, she was close to original. Having sat in a shed for a good twenty+ years, he was just getting ready to do a full restoration her when I ended up making the purchase. Originally made in Studebaker’s Pasadena factory, she was sold with a V6 which appears to have been upgraded a few years later with a Studebaker V8 with overdrive.

Although I really wanted to keep the engine original, it had been killed and would need a full rebuild (perhaps the welded-on trailer hitch had something to do with this). Staying realistic about what would work as a daily driver, I knew Studebaker engine parts could be hard to find and information harder to access – so I choose to go with a small-block Chevy.

Finding someone else’s abandoned Hot Rod Studebaker project was lucky for me. Stude got transplanted its innards: a stroked 383 Chevy small block, Ford 9″ rear end, and 700R4 transmission.  I’m still working on learning the magic of how to tune my 4-barrel Holly carburetor, while the racing Team-G manifold presents some daily-driving setbacks. After doing some engine tuning up at Gene Winfield’s, I learned that the engine has roller rockers and is cranking with a solid lift cam.

She’s still on drum brakes, which have worked well enough so far (excepting that time I lost my brakes – but that was due to a rubber brake line and single-reservoir master cylinder which have since been replaced with more reliable parts!) The suspension is original, which has had some work and needs much more.  I went my first couple years with a pretty bad piece-meal exhaust system, and was so thankful when my friends helped me make a custom system. I didn’t know how much difference an exhaust system can make!

The 700R4 automatic transmission with overdrive is good for driving plenty on LA highways. After having two “used” (aka: junkyard) 700R4s, I now have a newly rebuilt one in and it makes worlds of difference to performance too. The wheels are still original steelies which now roll with Mooneyes moondiscs. More needs to be done before she can live up to her full-power potential…but is a hot-rod ever really finished?!

Back in 2007 when Studebaker Parts and Service was doing the original engine work, I wanted something to do also. With experience in sewing, I decided that upholstery was something I could tackle (check out my interior 101 article to learn more). I’ve since also redone the headliner in glitter vinyl. I’m waiting on replacing the disintegrating rubber window seals, C-channels, and cats whiskers before redoing the interior a second time. I can’t wait to take it a step up and try out some more complicated features!

Stude still needs plenty of work, but she’s been a pretty solid daily driver for me. Money, time, knowledge, and hard work will continue getting she and I closer to our destination!

Great site, I’m impressed you redid the upholstery yourself. I think we need to roll in Stude for the next outreach.

Hi ‘dere! I thought that I’d share a picture of my ’55 Studebaker Champion, a 16G6 sedan. It’s not everyday that I see a ’55 Champion, even on the ‘net.

Ms. Lady, great blog. My first car was a ’55 Studebaker President Speedster. It was black with two large white stripes down the middle. It had a 352 V-8 with Carter 4bbl, Borg Warner three speed auto. Stuart Warner gauges. Speedometer went to 160 and I had it to 145, but the dirt was coming off the floor and I couldn’t see. A week later, at only 90 mph, a rear tire flew into pieces. Whew! Wish I had a picture to share, but that was many years ago.
Great blog. I will be back. Please come and visit my blog. I take pics of cars in West Michigan at car shows, show-n-shines, parades, etc. See ya!!

Hey Kristin! My neice is getting ready to graduate H.S. in the spring. After that, she’s headed to Denver for automotive school. I know she is excited but scared of the real world at the same time. I had seen you on the show “What I Hate About Me” and sent her the link to check your blog out right away. I just knew in my heart she needed someone to look up to. Like you, she loves for her hair to be done and nails painted. She is a girl all the way.

On another note, I’ve always wondered what I’d do if I had flat. I really had no idea how to change one. Thanks to the show you were on I have a pretty good idea of how to do that now. When it warms up here some in the frozen tundra, I’m planning on trying it out with my husband just to see how easy it actually is.

Anyway, I hope my neice looks at your blog. I really think it would be so good for her.- Cheri

Thanks Cheri! I’m so excited to hear that your niece will be heading onto automotive school – I’m hoping to see a few more women out in the garage with me :)

Let me know how changing the tire went!
      Happy Trails,
      Kristin

Hi Kristin, My Brother & Sister N Law John & Julie Aschenberg said they recently met you in LA at the Grand National Roadster Show. I have 51 Studebaker truck that is getting real close to being done. If you get on the Hub Garage and go to Studester’s Garage you can check it out and see what I have done so far. My Son lives in Las Vegas and last year we went to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly car show and we thought it was great. My wife & I are going to Vegas again this year to see our son in April and plan on going to the show again. Oh My son’s name is Ramon & he’s in the Air Force at Nellis and he’s into old Volkswagon’s

Do you go to this show???

Great to hear from ya Tom and Susan! Who knew that I’d find more Studebaker people at the same time I found a great woman car enthusiast/journalist! I will definitely check out your 51 project, it sounds great!
Viva Las Vegas is on my upcoming event list! I’ve been able to make it the past couple of years and am planning on being there again…however, we’ll see if the Studebaker comes out with me this time. She was there with me last year, although ended up being a little hidden by people crowded around the stage. I’ll also be over there in May for Bo Huff’s Rockabilly Rod Reunion.

Happy Trails! And keep me updated on the 51…a Studebaker-devoted page will be added to GreaseGirl soon :)

      Joe,
Thanks for the special invite! I would LOVE to make it to LaPalma…but I’m going to be in Las Vegas that weekend at the Rockabilly Reunion event! I’ve been trying to get to a Studebaker-specific event for awhile (such as the winter meet at the Peterson)…but it hasn’t happened yet!
It’s a lot of fun to be the only Studebaker at hot rod events…but I would love to meet up with my Studebaker brothers and sistas!
